WORDS and MUSIC
The first public performance of a new play for radio: Tabitha's Tablecloth
"The inspiration for the play was seeing a 17th Century damask linen tablecloth which had been handed down through generations of a friend's family. I imagined the person and the occasion which caused its making:
Tabitha is the only child of a rich but rough father, engaged to the son of the local aristocratic family. She is sweet but flighty, and everyone thinks she will settle down as soon as she has a man to her bed and bairns at her knee.
She does love Thomas- gentle, joking, mild Thomas, but then the handsome, mysterious foreigner Pieter de Witt arrives to weave her a cloth the like of which has never been seen in Cumberland...."
